“New novelty Big Bazaar” - cutlery cum provision store

In the tourist place like Mamallapuram (earlier know as Mahablipuram) you can see lots of shops and galleries which can attracts the attention of tourists but there are handful of cutlery stores, super markets and provision store to fulfill the basic & vital requirement of the villagers and tourists. Among these unnoticeable and unremarkable but crucial shops,   I have visited a cutlery cum provision store which is hidden between a small restaurant and one pan store. The shop has long rectangular area.


Mr. Raman
 I went there at around 3 pm. The owner, Mr. Raman (hails from Tirupattur) and his sales persons were not too busy as the rush was low because of the noontime but as time approached to evening shoppers started to come. The shop has fixed rate system. It sales each items at the fixed rate of Rs. 45. There was lots of item ranging from kitchen utensils to showpieces, toys to towels, gift articles to undergarments, flowers to plastic bags and buckets. The unique thing about this shop is it is seasonal shop. Its owner runs it from March to July every year. On asking him about this, he replied that this is vacation seasons and he cash on this opportunity. For optimization of income the owner implements some methods.
  • He puts attractive and gaudy colored articles and flowers at the entrance of the gate to catch the attention of the passer by.
  • On the entrance there are all gift articles and toys you can find in first glance. This is to attract the children who come with their parents. As all the item items are of same rate of Rs. 45 many times parents do not hesitate to purchase these things for their children.
  • All the necessary items of household utilizations lie deep inside of the hall. By the time person goes to purchase essential things he/she comes across many items which compels him/her to purchase as all these items are of essential use and its low price did not let buyer to think much.
  • Majority of the toys were hanging with ropes in entire hall to attract the children.
  • All the items were arranged thoughtfully utilizing the area of the shop. The owner has put all the related items together like there were cotton napkins, handkerchiefs and tower nearby kitchen utensils so that if the shoppers miss himself/herself something, the arrangement doesn’t let him/her forget it and bring those things to his/her notice. All the stationary items were lied together near to kitchen utensils. The important thing of this shop is all the item were in front of the customers and customer can see all items in one go.
  •  If I talk about the tendency of customers, by asking and questioning many customers I came to know that basket half of the items from their shopping were unplanned. Either they were reminded by their companions or demanded by their children or their partners. 
So it was my visit to cutlery cum provision store named “New novelty Big Bazaar” given by owner Mr. Raman. It was nice experience that such a small vendors also knows majority of the marketing tricks but they might know the theorem and formulas of it. If any medium or big players want to come to do business these markets, there many things they can learn from these local vendors.
